How to avoid a whiplash injury

The United Kingdom is now known as the 'whiplash capital of Europe', with injury compensation claims for whiplash now at the highest ever. On average 1200 people claim for a whiplash related injury every day.

Whiplash testing crash test dummy

Research has shown that there has been a 25% increase in whiplash related injury, which stems from two main factors - poorly fitted head restraints and people tailgating (driving too close to the vehicle in front)..

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) believe that whiplash injuries cost the NHS in excess of £8m a year yet it is estimated that 75% of British drivers have no idea how to fit their head restraints correctly; compared with an average of 40% in Europe.

So how should your head restraint be positioned?

To reduce the chance of sustaining a whiplash injury in a crash, restraints should be positioned high enough to protect the head so as to minimise neck distortion. Ideally, the top of the head restraint should be positioned even with the top of the head and at least level with the top of the ears or about 3.5 inches below the top of the head.

Because people differ in height, the amount of adjustment varies. For some occupants no adjustment from the lowest position is required. The distance from the back of the head to the restraint should be as small as possible, preferably less than 4 inches.

On seats without horizontally adjusting head restraints, this can be adjusted by adjusting the seatback recline angle.
