Local councils told to repair pavements (reported by the BBC on 24/06/2008)
The BBC has today reported that local councils have been told to repair broken and damaged pavements, due to the number of compensation claims being made against them as a result of people falling over them (especially the elderly).
This follows investigations carried out by the BBC in 2007 including one that showed local councils had paid out over £6m in compensation and legal fees since 1991 to people who had tripped over on broken and damaged pavements.
According to the BBC News website "Claims included everything from £43,000 for a leg injury to £3.28 for some dented dog food tins".
