The Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) is lobbying the government to keep in place legislation that helps injured workers to claim compensation.
Currently, employers are legally required to retain insurance policy records for at least 40 years.
However, the government is considering repealing this policy records law because they believe that the law is impossible to enforce, and unnecessarily adds to the ‘administrative burden’ of businesses.
APIL’s president Amanda Stevens said that to change policy records law would be disastrous for employees who contract ‘long tail’ diseases in the workplace, which can take up to 40 years to develop.
Ms. Stevens added that the government should not only keep the current legislation, but make it more stringent, requiring employers to keep a database of insurance policies.
